Picking a league starter in Path of Exile 2 version 0.5 isnt about chasing the loudest build on day one. Its about getting through the campaign without feeling like every boss is a brick wall. Early damage matters. So does movement, screen safety, and how little gear the build needs before it starts working. A good starter should let you save your first bits of PoE 2 Currency instead of burning it just to fix a character that feels bad at level 35. Youll notice it fast: some skills feel complete with basic rares, while others keep asking for attack speed, uniques, or late-game supports before they wake up.
Ranged starters still feel the cleanest
Bow and crossbow builds are still the safest bet for most players. Ice Shot with Snipe is a strong example because it clears packs well and still gives you a proper answer for bosses. You dont have to stand in danger for long, and that matters a lot in a fresh league. Lightning Arrow setups also feel good early, especially when paired with the right rods and simple damage scaling. Crossbow players can look at Shockburst and Galvanic Shards for a steadier, more direct playstyle. These builds dont need fancy items to function. They just need decent weapons, sensible links, and a player whos willing to keep moving.
Melee can work, but dont force it too early
Close-range builds are in a better spot than many people expected, but theyre not all equal. Shield Wall paired with Smith of Kitava has a lot going for it: solid defence, steady pressure, and fewer awkward moments where youre waiting for the build to "come online." Martial Artist also opens up some fun routes, especially if you like unarmed or fast melee combat. Hollow Form has clear appeal, though it asks for more care than a basic ranged setup. Falling Thunder on Amazon or Martial Artist looks more like a great second character. Start safe, build some wealth, then reroll into it when you can actually support the damage and speed it wants.
Spells and minions need a bit more judgement
Spell starters can be smooth, but performance is a real concern now. Essence Drain and Contagion remain the kind of setup that just gets on with the job: apply damage, move, repeat. Its not flashy, and thats part of the charm. Spark is more complicated. It can become strong, especially around Cast on Crit ideas, but the road there can be messy and visually noisy. Ballcano-style skills have the same issue, and weaker PCs may hate them. Minion players should also be careful. Early wolves sound cool, but they tend to fall over and scale poorly in the campaign. Animal Legion is much better later. If you want minions from the start, a Tactician with big, tough summons is the calmer choice.
Avoid the hype traps
The builds that look amazing in endgame clips arent always good starters. Twister-based setups are the classic trap: slow early, hungry for attack speed, and painful before the gear catches up. Grenade Witchhunter can be fun if you already like trap-style spacing, but it wont suit everyone. Djinn-themed choices also feel too shaky for a first character right now. Go with something that deals damage on basic gear, keeps you out of trouble, and doesnt ask for miracles from the trade market. If you later decide to use PoE 2 Currency buy options to speed up a reroll or upgrade path, do it after your first build has already carried you into maps with confidence.
League-start PoE 2 v0.5 with less guesswork at U4GM, where practical build advice meets player-friendly support.
